Stop At: Cantina Castello di Torre in Pietra, Via di Torrimpietra 247, 00054 Torrimpietra Italy

Already from the Middle Ages the Tenuta di Torre in Pietra, with its production of wine and cereals, was one of the most important agricultural centers of the Roman countryside. The winery has always been located within the medieval village of Torre in Pietra, close to the tower from which the village and the company take their name. In the Middle Ages with the noble family Aldobrandeschi became a fortified agricultural center, then in the 16th century it was bought by Pope Sixtus V Peretti for his sister Camilla and transformed into a country residence. The cellar was built by digging under a hill in tuff (formed from the ashes of the volcano of Bracciano) and used for the production of wine from the '600. In the 18th century, with the passage to the Falconieri family, the castle was further transformed and embellished.

In 1926 the estate was bought by Luigi Albertini, historical director of Corriere della Sera and grandfather of the current owners of the Castle. It was Albertini himself, assisted by his son Leonardo and his son-in-law Nicolò Carandini, to start a major reclamation work on the estate and to introduce, among the first in Italy, the Friesian bovine breed for milk production. In 1938, during excavation excavations, numerous remains of prehistoric elephants (Elephas Europeus) were found.

Renovated in 1999, the winery uses the most modern technologies. The company store is located at the entrance of the ancient caves: the wines, grappa and extra-virgin olive oil of the Castello di Torre in Pietra can be tasted and purchased directly. Since 2011 all the wines bottled by Castello di Torre in Pietra are certified organic. Better and healthier grapes. This is the goal that led producers Filippo Antonelli and Lorenzo Majnoni to convert the management of the vineyards of the Castello di Torre in Pietra winery to organic farming methods.

But the latest news is the Osteria dell'Elefante, located inside the cellar behind the store. The new Osteria adds to the enotourist offer a good cuisine, of territory and seasonal, to accompany the wines produced in Torre in Pietra.
