The Vesuvius eruption of the 79AD has been one of the most dreadful events of the Italian history. The proof of the fierce burst of the volcano has been preserved into the Pliny the Young’s letters to his friend Tacitus, since he himself has been a spectator and a survivor. And it is through his words that we can understand the awful range of this catastrophe. Starting with earthquakes two days before the actual eruption, Herculaneum citizens gathered on the seashore, waiting to be rescued – and it is there that many of them perished due to the heat. The next day the city was buried with layers of lava and ashes.
