The palace has a rectangular layout, with three internal courtyards. The collections, made up of around 20,000 objects, are laid out over three floors. The royal park which surrounds the building was designed by Sanfelice, one of the greatest Neapolitan architects of the Baroque period, and occupies around 134 hectares, with over 400 different species of plants. Many of these are rare and exotic, such as camphor, camellia, magnolia and eucalyptus, which were planted over the span of two centuries.
The Royal Apartments are located on the first floor of the museum, and are furbished according to the tastes of the various sovereigns who succeeded to the throne of Naples, from Charles Bourbon to his son Ferdinando, as well as the Murats, who governed during the decade of Napoleonic domination, and decorated the space with French furniture.
