Pass By: Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montenero, Via Dei Santuari Nell'omonima Località a Riomaggiore, 19017 Riomaggiore Italy
Site of devotion for the citizens of Riomaggiore, the sanctuary was founded after the finding of a byzantine icon which soon became a pilgrimage destination. The current look of the sanctuary is due to the deep transformations occurred in the 18th and 19th century.
Pass By: Volastra, Volastra, Province of La Spezia, Liguria
This village, whose circular plan may refer to an Etruscan foundation, stands at 330 metres upon sea level in the outback of Manarola. The Romanesque sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Salute is indeed meant to protect the coastal village.
Pass By: Santuario di Soviore, Localita Soviore SNC, 19016 Monterosso al Mare Italy
This sanctuary is the most ancient of the whole region Liguria, dating back at least to 1244; the cult is focused on a wooden statue of Holy Mary, brought to the outback by local people during the Lombard invasions and found one hundred years later. It is a devotion site for the citizens of Monterosso.
Today, the site also features a small congress centre, a cafeteria, a museum and a guest house.
Pass By: Monterosso al Mare, Monterosso al Mare, Cinque Terre, Italian Riviera, Liguria
The most western and populous of Cinque Terre; its foundation could be dated in the 9th century. In the 13th, Monterosso was contended between the rival forces of Genova and Pisa, being finally occupied by the first. In 1545 it was severely damaged, like most coastal villages in Italy, by a Turkish attack. The remaining of the castle keep the traces of these conflicts, featuring three round towers, the square "Torre Aurora" on the cliff and the medieval tower in the village centre.
