Before World War II, Rome was meant by the Fascist government to become the symbol of its authority and the capital of a new empire. Thus, massive works were planned to prepare to the International Exhibition of 1942, who should have taken place in the Eternal City.
An entire district, called EUR, was designed under the principles of Rationalist Architecture, with the purpose to determine and show off a new classical language, speaking for the Italian culture and civilization.
This private guided tour will lead you to discover the atmospheres and the most outstanding landmarks of this district, which was actually completed in the Fifties: from the Palazzo dei Congressi to the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, currently seat of Fendi headquarters.

The building is also known as the "Square colosseum" since its four identical facades feature 54 arches each (nine rows of six arches each). The construction begun in 1938, waiting for the International Exhibition which should have taken place in Rome, in 1942.
Due to the outbreach of WW2, the construction stopped in 1943 and was completed only in 1951/52.
The concrete structure is hidden by a complete travertine coating, recalling Roman architecture of the Imperial Age.

The construction of this building started in 1938 and was interrupted during WW2; it was only after the war, when the representation needs of Rome as a capital started to be urgent, that the works were completed (1954). The architect, Adalberto Libera, conceived the Congress Palace as a frankly contemporary architecture, as free as possible by the rhetorical and political implications of the "classical" style chosen by Fascist authority.
