Matera: a magical and unique city of stone that has been chosen as a natural set for several films (such as the "Passion of Christ" by Mel Gibson) with its two old quarters called Sassi (which means stones): Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano . The Sassi of Matera have been

declared, in 1993, UNESCO World Heritage because they represent "the most exceptional and intact"

example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region, perfectly integrated into his

ecosystem.

Altamura takes its name from the megalithic walls (Alte-Mura) which were built around 500 BC. The walk in the historic center will capture you among its narrow streets and its cloisters. The cathedral built by the Holy Roman Empire Frederick II of Swabia is a beautiful example of Romanesque style.

But Altamura will also conquer your palate with its famous focaccia cooked on stone and the DOP bread of Altamura (the same mentioned by

 Latin poetry Horace in his Satire of 37 a. C. as a tasty bread appreciated among travelers because

it could last up to 2 weeks) cooked in a 50 square meter brick oak wood-fired oven. For sweets lovers there are

old recipes from the artisan pastry laboratory of the monastery of Santa Chiara, and finally the green nut liqueur Don Peppe.

It is also possible to taste excellent Primitivo and Aglianico wines.
