In 1912 a salty tuna processing plant was built in Marzamemi and later in oil. Tuna fishing was abundant until the post-war period. In Marzamemi there were two slaughterings every day: one in the morning and one in the early afternoon. The camperia was the canning plant leaning against the loggia and the Prince's palace, the ruins of which, delimited by the Via Jonica, via Marzamemi and via Letizia, are recognizable by the high quadrilateral smokestack (now at risk of collapse). Originally there were two smokestacks, but the most majestic collapsed on June 12, 1943, a few days before the Allied landing, when the tuna trap was strafed, with dead and wounded, by the British air force. [3] The plant in the last period operated on behalf of the fish preservation industry of Angelo Parodi from Genoa. Workers were Genoese specialists (as for the other tuna traps in the area) as was the Genoese director, for whom a first floor accommodation was built within the factory itself. The boxes of different sizes, produced in Marzamemi, were marketed under the trademark "AP Angelo Parodi Genova - Tuna in pure olive oil - Processing on the fishing spot." The plant, which closed in 1926 due to lack of raw materials , raised in 1937 by the noble Miss Preziosa dei Baroni Bruno di Belmonte di Ispica. For a long period all the catch of the tuna was exclusively reserved to the Syracusans Cappuccio. After the death of Ottavio Nicolaci, none of the Villadorata stayed in the palace and the tonnara closed permanently in 1969.
