Would you like to experience something different? Visiting Miho Museum, an hour away from Kyoto by train and bus, is a completely off-the-beaten experience. You will learn pottery making in a ceramic atelier with a guesthouse located in the cozy forest garden of Shigaraki pottery village.

Itinerary

Day 1: Travel from Kyoto station to Shiga

Stop At: Miho Museum, 300 Shigarakicho Tashiro Momotani, Koka 529-1814 Shiga Prefecture
Nestled deep in the mountains of Shigaraki an hour away from Kyoto, visiting Miho Museum is a completely off-the-beaten experience. the glass pyramid building was designed by a Chinese American Architect, I. M. Pei, who created his version of mythical earthly paradise in the deep valley. There are over 2000 pieces collection, of which approximately 250 are displayed at any time.

Stop At: Shigaraki Pottery Village, 1131 Nagano, Koka 529-1851 Shiga Prefecture
Shigaraki village is known as one of 'The Six Old Kilns' in Japan. The origin of the village dates back to Emperor Shomu's Palace in 742, and the kiln was developed during the medieval period. The earliest kiln date back to 1278. You can enjoy the hidden medieval village of pottery artists.

Day 2: Pottery experience, making your own cup at an artist's atelier

Stop At: Shigaraki Kamamoto Sansakuro Walking Street, Nagano Shigarakicho, Koka 529-1851 Shiga Prefecture
In the morning, you can see many "Anagama" cave kilns along the walking course of the pottery village. These workshops welcome travelers who love arts and pottery. Why not making your own tea bowl under the supervision of an artist.
