Ouchijuku, once a flourished post town during the Edo period (1603 - 1868) where feudal lords and soldiers would stop by at this area during their travels. Restrictions were set by shogunate that required travelers to make their travels on foot so as a result these post towns were developed to help these travelers with food and accommodations. The main road was once called the Aizu West Road or the Shimotsuke Kaido which was an important road due to its connection from the Aizu Wakamatsu (Castle town in Fukushima Prefecture) and Imaichi (Tochigi Prefecture).
Even though this post town was busy during the Edo period a new national road, the National Highway 121 was constructed far to the east, affected the town drastically due to it. However it could be a blessing of a sort since the buildings and the town itself was left alone preserving its history making it a very popular sightseeing spot in Japan.
When visiting the Ouchijuku village you will notice the thatched roof of the building.
Usually a thatched roof in Japan can be up to a meter thick and are all hand woven from thick reeds that comes from communal grasslands. They are woven into matts that are tied on to the beams of the house by straw ropes. What makes these roof different is that they are no nails used. Usually the thatched roofs are replaced every 30 or 40 years. As many as 500 people will take part in replacing a single roof.
