Aktau (means "white mountains") is the chalk mountains of different colors, mostly white.

The mountains have picturesque, Martian landscapes.

The age of mountains is 60 - 70 million years. The mountains are composed of a lifeless bright-colored stones which are very mysterious creation of nature.

These blue, red, white, pink, green slopes cut by erosion, so unusual that it is impossible to overlook them.

So-called Singing Dune is a popular attraction in Altyn-Emel. The size of the Dune is enormous: its length is about two-three kilometers, with the height of about 120 meters. What is unique about the Dune is that in dry weather it produces melody-like sounds, which is the very reason for calling it Singing Dune. The ‘song’ of the Dune can be heard even several kilometers away from its location.

Day 1: Almaty - Altyn Emel Park - Singing Dune

Stop At: Singing Barkhan, National Park Altyn Emel Kazakhstan
You will visit one of the most magnificent places of Kazakhstan - The Singing Dune in Altyn-Emel National Park. In dry weather, you can hear the melodious sounds from the sand dunes that resemble organ playing. Over the time, this huge dune has grown: up to 3 kilometers long and 150 meters high.

Aktau Mountains could surprise you by its red, green, pink or even pale blue colored stony slopes. The mountains are likely to be risen from the place where there used to be sea, which left its traces on the surface of the mountains. Archaeologists have discovered dinosaur bones in the mountains of Aktau, and remains of other species are being found even today.

The main feature of this array is the complete absence of vegetation, so the landscape resembles fantastic lunar landscapes. The mountains are characterized by nakedness and steepness of the slopes.

Aktau is a small mountain massif located in the Eastern part of Altyn Emel National Park. Its origin is connected with the rising of land area that is a long time ago-back in the Cretaceous period was the bottom of the ancient Tethys Ocean. Before lifting and draining of land, sea currents, connecting and intertwining with each other, lowered portable terrestrial rocks of different composition and density to the bottom. Over millions of years after the retreat of the ocean, the water and wind have washed and weathered weak rock, erecting of the remaining species whimsical shapes and compositions. The whole landscape of Aktau mountains is so unusual and fantastic, that it feels like another planet. It is impossible to descried the beauty: it is definitely should be visited!
