4 Days 3 Nights Marsabitchalbi Desert north Horr Samburu Safari

ast of the remote Lake Turkana is the Chalbi Desert, a 100,000 square kilometer area (38,610 square miles) that is aptly named in the native language of the Gabra people as “salty and bare.” Like many of the areas in the Northern Frontier, the desert was once part of an extensive lake, as evidenced by the basin that fills with shallow water during heavy rains and fossilized remains of snail shells and fish vertebrae. When you journey into Chalbi Desert, prepare yourself for an eerie landscape edged by rocky lava flows, cracked earth and a sandy mixture of white salt and clay across which your guide carefully drives through. Even in this barren and desolate location, you may see a shadow emerge in the distance, as ostriches, grevy’s zebras, oryx and other adapted animals are often observed in the desert. Amazingly, spotted hyena have been seen too. The Chalbi Desert, though, does have a secret.

Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi -Marsabit

Stop At: Národní park Marsabit, Marsabit, Kenya
Day 1: Nairobi to Marsabit
Depart early from Nairobi and drive north past Nanyuki and the beautiful farmlands of Timau to stop for fuel at Isiolo. Drive north and stop over for photos and sightseeing at Mt. Ololokwe before proceed to Marsabit, a cool mountain town in the North. Drive up to Lake Marsabit in time to see the animals coming out for an evening drink. The sunset from the hills are also worth the drive. Camp at the park gate for the night.

Stop At: Equator Marker, Nyeri - Nanyuki Road, Nanyuki Town, Nanyuki Municipality 10400 Kenya

Stop At: Mt. Ololokwe, Kenya

Day 2: Marsabit to Chalbi Desert – North Horr/Kalacha

Stop At: Chalbi Desert, Marsabit Kenya
After breakfast embark on crossing the great Chalbi desert. The journey leads you to a beautiful oasis at the edge of the Chalbi desert.The vast landscapes and sand dunes will amaze you. The crossing with skilled drivers on sand is thrilling. Spend the evening in bandas at the edge of the desert. The nights are great for stargazing.

Day 3: Marsabit-kalacha -Samburu National park

Stop At: Samburu National Reserve, Nairobi Kenya
Depart East to connect to the main highway, and continue south to Samburu National park. This is a great park for viewing the big five right from your campsite at the edge of the river. Dinner and overnight in the park.

Day 4: Samburu national park -Nairobi

Stop At: Samburu National Reserve, Nairobi Kenya
Enjoy an early morning game drive in the park. You may also stop over at Ngare Ndare if time allow. Later in the day depart south to Nairobi to arrive late in the evening.
