The Ninth Fort Museum Entrance Ticket
Step back in history on your visit at Kaunas Ninth Fort Museum. The museum is in a part of a memorial complex and houses two expositions: Exposition of Occupations and The Ninth Fort.
The Ninth Fort was a part of the defense system of Kaunas Fortress. The fort was set up in 1913. After the First World War the Ninth Fort has never been used as a defensive fortification. In 1924 the Ninth Fort became a division of the Kaunas Hard Labour Prison. In 19401941 and 19441948 there was the NKVD (The People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs) prison. During the Nazi occupation the Ninth Fort was a site of massacre. From 1941 to 1944 in the Ninth Fort more than 50.000 people of different nations were killed. Most of them were Jewish. In 1958, a decision was made to commemorate the killed people, and a museum was established in the Ninth Fort. In 1984, after almost 18 years of designing and building works, a three-part 32-meter height monument and a distinctive-form museum building were built near the Ninth Fort to commemorate the victims of Holocaust.
