The Museo del Templo Mayor opened its doors on October 12, 1987. Its creation was a consequence of the archaeological excavations carried out by the Templo Mayor Project in its first season, between 1978 and 1982, which were made under the direction of Eduardo Matos Moctezuma and they allowed to recover a collection of more than 7 thousand objects, as well as the vestiges of the Main Temple of Tenochtitlan and some surrounding buildings. All this gave rise to the initiative to build a site museum to exhibit this collection and, at the same time, complement the visit of the archaeological zone.
The main place of the lobby has been occupied, since 2010, by the magnificent and impressive polychrome relief that represents the Earth goddess, Tlaltecuhtli, the largest sculptural piece of Mexican invoice that has been found.

It is amazing the expertise of its construction, its innovative design, its art and its symbolism, which have given it a widely recognized personality around the world. Built in 1963 and 1964 in the Bosque de Chapultepec, by instuctions of the then President Adolfo Lopez Mateos who opened it in 1964.
