Traditional celebrations in indigenous villages of Chiapas
On January 20-22, we will travel to the Festival of San Sebastian in ZINACANTAN, an indigenous town near San Cristobal de Las Casas. WE WILL NOT TRAVEL TO SAN JUAN CHAMULA.
The population of Zinacantan pays tribute to San Sebastián Mártir, with candles, incense, sedge and precious branches of its traditional floriculture. The possibly most unique and diverse part of the celebrations is the JAGUAR TREE ritual.
The purpose of this ritual, represented by Zinacanteco men, is to bring the good luck to start the new year of agriculture. Men, dressed as jaguars, climb the tree, while others, dressed as monkeys, throw dead squirrels at them. Jaguars try to catch squirrels and place them in the cages they have on their backs.
The experience is more than visual: thanks to my explanations about the roots of customs and legends that you will hear, you will see it from another perspective.
In addition, we will visit a local family and the pantheon.
