Fez is a city in northern Morocco, located 180 km east of Rabat, between the Rif Massif and the Middle Atlas. As part of the imperial cities of Morocco, it was at several times the capital of the country and is considered today as its spiritual capital. Its foundation dates back to the end of the twentieth century, during the reign of Moulay Idriss I. Its international influence has become one of the major centers of Islamic civilization alongside Baghdad, Damascus, Cordoba, Cairo, Kairouan, Istanbul, Tunis, Jerusalem, Isfahan or Samarkand. Various titles have been awarded to the city of Fez, including the Athens of Africa, the Queen of the Maghreb and the Baghdad of the Maghreb.

Fez extends over three sectors: the ancient city (medina), a UNESCO World Heritage site, the royal enclosure and the new neighborhoods, established by the French, which nowadays extend into the surrounding plain. . Administratively, the city is composed of the municipality of Fez (divided into six districts) and the municipality of Méchouar Fes Jdid (where the royal palace is located). Fez is the 2nd largest city in Morocco with a population of 1,112,072 inhabitants according to the 2014 census.

Chefchaouen, or Chaouen, is a city located in the Rif mountains, in northwestern Morocco. It is famous for the remarkable buildings of different tones of faded blue of its old town. In the shaded central square of Outa el Hammam is the casbah with red walls, fortress and dungeon of the fifteenth century with ethnographic and artistic exhibitions. The octagonal minaret of the Great Mosque rises not far from there.
