Stop At: Settat, Settat, Chaouia-Ouardigha Region
Near Settat we take a small coffee break in the roadside restaurant where they have different types of delicious coffee.
Settat is a city in Morocco just south of Casablanca Airport and at a distance of 57 kilometers from Casablanca.
King Moulay Ismaïl initiated the process of urbanization by building the kasbah on the hilly site of present-day Settat. The construction of the kasbah has contributed to the order and safety of both travelers and residents. The kasbah has also promoted human settlements in the immediate area. Moulay Ismaïl officially made Settat the capital of the region by appointing the first Caid.
The city of Settat has become an administrative center in the early 13th century. She owed that honor primarily to her strategic position as a gateway between the North and the South. Thanks to the richness of the soil, the city flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries as a trading center for agricultural products. In that era, Settat attracted many people with an entrepreneurial spirit. In the 19th century, the city attracted many Moroccans with a Jewish belief. They built their own city district there.
As a French protectorate, the city experienced urbanization like never before. The population increase that Settat knew from 1913 to 1925 is the best example of this. As a result, the city continued its commercial past. Prosperity lasted until the 1950s when, due to the development of Casablanca, the traffic routes and means of transport in and to the city of Settat and other agglomerations did not develop sufficiently.
In the early 90s of the 20th century, the city was enriched with a university, a golf course and a hippodrome. The industrial sector developed with the most dynamic industrial zones of Morocco. Settat has been connected to Casablanca (57 km) since 2001 by the A7 motorway and to Marrakesh (146 km) since 2007.
Every year in Settat, during the first week of July or September, the moussem of Chaouia is organized. Many Moroccan cities have a moussem, an annual pilgrimage in honor of the local saint, accompanied by festivities. During the pilgrimage a fantasia is held, a kind of equestrian game.
The moussem therefore not only has a religious function (the patron saint honors the city), but also a social and cultural role.
The sport fantasia is mainly practiced in North Africa and is best known for the gallop charge of a group of riders, followed by a sudden stop of the horses with riders firing a shot and then taking a half turn.
Settat has 35 schools. Settat also has room for the Université Hassan I, one of the most prestigious institutions in Morocco. The population is around 150,000.
Duration: 20 minutes
Pass By: Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, Route de Nouasseur, Casablanca, Morocco
During our day trip to Casablanca we leave the airport of Casablanca on the left (actually on the right).
Mohammed V International Airport is the busiest airport in Morocco. The airport is located 20 km south of the city of Casablanca and functions as the home of Royal Air Maroc. The airport is growing considerably. For example, a second take-off and landing runway has been created, parallel to the first. A second and a third terminal have also been added. These are mainly used for foreign flights. In addition, a third runway is being worked on.
In the first half of the 1950s, the base played an important role as a starting point for nuclear bombers en route to the Soviet Union. It was also a storage facility for nuclear weapons in those years, alongside Ben Guerir. The base also served for some time as an (emergency) landing place for the Space Shuttle. Later all these activities were moved to Ben Guerir Air Base.
After the end of the French administration, the then King Mohammed V demanded the departure of the American bases from Morocco. After America's intervention in Lebanon in 1958, the pressure to leave was intensified and in 1963 the Americans withdrew completely from Morocco.
On April 1, 1970, a Sud Aviation SE 210 Caravelle from Royal Air Maroc crashed during landing at the airport from a height of around 150 meters. The hull broke into two pieces and 61 of the 82 passengers and crew members died.
Stop At: Hassan II Mosque, Boulevard de la Corniche, Casablanca 20000, Morocco
First we go to the beautiful Hassan II Mosque and view it from the outside and the inside. The tickets must be purchased at the nearby museum about a 5-minute walk from the entrance of the Mosque.
The Hassan II mosque in Morocco is a modern large mosque built by order of King Hassan II. It is the largest mosque in the country and is one of the 7 largest mosques in the world. The mosque was designed by the French architect Michel Pinseau.
The mosque is on the coast and offers a view of the Atlantic Ocean. In addition to the 25,000 people who can find a place inside, there is room for 85,000 people outside.
The nine-hectare complex of the mosque is located between the harbor and the El-Hank lighthouse. Hassan II Mosque is a 20-minute walk from the nearest train station. Half of the mosque is built on land and the other half of the mosque overlooks the sea.
At night, up in the minaret, spotlights glow in the direction of Mecca. In addition to these - mainly - religiously inspired demands of client King Hassan II, there are more modern features: the building is designed to withstand earthquakes, the doors are electrically controlled and the complex has a roof that can slide open. The mosque has clear Moorish influences and the architecture corresponds to the Alhambra and the Mezquita in Spain. The Hassan II mosque is the only mosque in Morocco that is open to non-Muslims.
In 1980 King Hassan II announced his ambitions for a large monument in Morocco. The works started on July 12, 1986 and it would take 7 years before the huge mosque was finished. During the most intensive period, 1,400 construction workers worked during the day and were relieved by 1,100 construction workers who continued working during the night. All the granite, plaster, marble, wood and other materials used in the complex come from all regions of Morocco, with the exception of some white granite columns and the glass chandeliers: both come from Italy. Six thousand traditional Moroccan artisans have worked for six years to process all these raw materials into mosaics, stones, marble floors, columns, carvings and painted ceilings.
Construction period 1986 - 1993. Construction costs 400 - 700 million dollars (nobody knows the exact amount).
The number of domes is 1. The number of minarets is 1 and the height thereof is 210 meters.
