Cosiguina volcano

The Cosiguina Volcano is located in the municipality of El Viejo, Chinandega, northwest of Nicaragua. Occupies the center of the Chinandega peninsula and is one of the last refuges for wildlife in the country's Pacific coast.

It covers an area of 13,000 hectares and its truncated cone has a height of 872 meters. Fom there you can see the Estero Padre Ramos, the islands of the Gulf of Fonseca, volcanoes Conchagua and San Miguel in El Salvador, and the coasts of Honduras and the island of Ometepe.

This volcano in 1835 was protagonist of the most violent eruption in recent history of Nicaragua giving rise to the islands off the Gulf of Fonseca.

Inside there is a crater lake covering 1.5 km. The characteristic blue-green color of its waters is due to emissions of gases that come from within. The interior walls are so steep rock that make the inaccessible lagoon.
