The Layovers tour of Panama City and the Panama Canal begins with a fascinating visit to the Miraflores Locks Visitor Center on the Panama Canal. Then continue to the newly opened Museum of Biodiversity, designed by Frank Gehry and located on the Amador Causeway. Continue to the historical part of the city of Casco Viejo. End the tour with a historic walking tour of the historic center that houses beautiful restored colonial houses and interesting architecture, beautiful cathedrals and squares.

Stop At: Panama Canal, Panama City Panama

This morning you will begin your tour of the city in the Panama Canal, where you will visit the Visitor Center of the Panama Canal in the Miraflores Locks, where you can see boats in transit along the waterway. The 3-story showrooms will provide information on the history, engineering and current events related to the Panama Canal.

Then drive through the former Panama Canal Zone administered by the United States from 1903 to 1999. The former military bases have become residential neighborhoods, universities and one of the most important commercial centers in the region that combine airports, ports of containers and freight railroads that provide support for the Panama Canal operation.

Your next stop is the Biodiversity Museum, designed by the famous architect Frank Gehry. As a Smithsonian affiliated museum, the Biodiversity Museum serves as a gateway to new information on biodiversity and the natural history of the Isthmus of Panama. Scientific experts from the Smithsonian Institute and the University of Panama oversee the contents of the museum and aim to teach visitors about the ecological awareness, conservation and extraordinary natural treasures of Panama in several unique exhibition galleries. Continue to Casco Antiguo (the old city complex) dating from the late 1600s where it begins with the popular market you will have the opportunity to admire and obtain local and indigenous handicrafts. Casco Viejo is the home of monuments to Ferdinand de Lesseps and other fundamental French in the unfortunate attempt of the French to build a canal through Panama that became the new city of Panama at the time. This part of the city was never successfully attacked, protected by a wall surrounding the new settlement. You will visit the church of San José with the famous Golden Altar, one of the few testimonies of all the wealth that made its way through this city.
