Ausangate is located south east of the city of Cusco and its summit is about 19,000 feet above sea level. It is crowned by majestic glaciers, and since ancient times is considered one of the major deities in this area. In Incan mythology, Ausungate is considered as the keeper of llamas and alpacas, and is revered by the natives as the region is inhabited by llama and alpaca herding communitiesone of the few remaining pastoralist societies in the world. High mountain trails are used by these herders to trade with agricultural communities at lower elevations. One of these trails, the road of the Apu Ausangate, is considered one of the most renowned treks in Peru.
