The archaeological site of Huaca Pucllana is located on the central coast of the Republic of Peru, on the left bank of the valley below the Rimac River, in an area formerly irrigated by a branch of the so-called Surco River.
Huaca Pucllana was built by people of the Lima culture, between 200 and 700 AD on the central coast of Peru. Specifically, between the valleys of the Chancay rivers, to the north and Lurín, to the south. Its main ceremonial centers such as Pucllana are located in the middle of the valleys but the villages were located around them or on the beaches without forming true urban centers.
They dedicated themselves to agriculture, livestock and also to fishing and shellfish collection, to which they paid special attention. They built gigantic ceremonial centers built with mud bricks and were a peaceful town. Its pottery was used for various domestic and religious uses.
The inhabitants of the Lima culture did not form a single kingdom or an empire. The valleys were divided into several curacazgos by way of small kingdoms that had to have equal treatment with each other. It is likely that the Sanctuary of Pachacamac has had greater importance due to its religious prestige.
Huaca Pucllana was not properly a city, it was a ceremonial center and as such it was intended to be the residence of a priestly elite who possessed both political and religious and economic power. At the same time, it served to exercise from this site the power to the area of the valley that corresponded to it.
Huaca Pucllana has basically two distinct areas: the Great Pyramid and its squares and a lower part formed by squares with sidewalks. Each of these two areas had a different functionality: the pyramid was destined to be a place of worship while the lower part is associated with more daily activities or related to direct dealing with the population.
The pyramid is an elongated building of more than 400 meters long and 22 meters high, which has seven platforms in sight in each of which are squares, enclosures and passages, some of them painted yellow. In the lower part we find places and systems of enclosures. The lower part is of more recent construction than the pyramid and it is likely that at the beginning Pucllana was only a religious center and then annexes were required for administrative activities.
Given its importance as a ceremonial center after the Lima were conquered by the Wari, the site was transformed into a cemetery and remained so until the Ishma manor. It is one of the Wari burials that has been able to recover important textile evidence, unique in its kind on the central coast, as well as ceramics, mates and other objects present in the tombs help us to know about the settlers who settled on the coast central with the conquest of this at the hands of the wari empire.
The Huaca Pucllana Site Museum was created in 1984, as a result of the research work initiated in 1981 to safeguard the recovered archaeological objects and maintain a presence on the site that ensures their conservation. It is from that date that the site is also working through an inter-institutional agreement between the National Institute of Culture and the Municipality of Miraflores, this agreement aims to maintain research on the site and enable tourism services through the conservation and enhancement of the place.
The Pucllana Cultural Historical Park is the result of the scientific desire to rescue, conserve and investigate the Huaca Pucllana, as one of the most important monuments of the city of Lima, not only because of its size, but also because of the cultural evidences that allow archaeologists and others Social and natural scientists reconstruct part of the history of pre-Columbian Lima.
