The concentration camp was established by the Nazis in 1940 on the outskirts of Oświęcim, a city located in southern Poland about 70km from Krakow. The camp has become a symbol of terror and the Holocaust. In 1942 it was also the largest of all death camps. Between 1940 and 1945 about 1,5 million people, mainly Jews, Poles and Romas were murdered there by the Nazis.
