Krakow Jewish Traces Private Tour

Before the war, there were 65 thousand Jews living side by side among the inhabitants of Krakow as their neighbours and fellow citizens. Nowadays, the community numbers among its members less than 500 people. But the memory, Jewish traditions, and the unique, historic quarter of Kazimierz remained, surviving the tragic times of war and homicide. Today, the district is alive with multicultural, artistic atmosphere, where each and every alley hides an interesting shop, a café, or one of the seven remaining synagogues, each completely different and special in its character. Among them, you will find, for example, the modest Remuh synagogue – one that is still open and functioning, as well as the ornate, colourful Tempel synagogue, with its characteristic stained-glass windows, where many concerts and cultural events are held.

We would like to invite you on this fascinating walk along the paths of Jewish history and traditions, but with the vibe of contemporary atmosphere of Kazimierz.

This story dates back to the 13th and 14th century, when after a long and exhausting journey across Europe, a group of Jewish people was finally welcomed by the city of Krakow – at that time, the capital of Poland. With time, not without pressures from the locals, the dynamically developing community moved to the neighbouring, then completely independent town of Kazimierz. For centuries, the streets of Kazimierz were vibrantly pulsing with everyday life, with religion – both Judaism and Christianity – and culture merging to create the unique atmosphere of the place.

The tragic events of the period of World War II are commemorated, among others, through the exhibition at the Oscar Schindler’s Factory, as well as through buildings and artistic installations cantered around Ghetto Heroes’ Square in Podgórze.

The New Jewish Cemetery contains over 10,000 tombs, the oldest dating from 1809. It is the final resting place of the most outstanding Jews of Kraków from the 19th century to the present day.
