Praça do Giraldo is an icon of honor to Geraldo Geraldes, the "No Fear", because it conquered Évora to the Moors in 1167. In appreciation for this enormous achievement, D. Afonso Henriques named him mayor of the city and frontier Alentejo, a region that would help to conquer.

The Castle of Monsaraz was built by D. Dinis in 1310 on an existing defensive structure that began with a prehistoric castro and later with Roman, Visigoth and Arab buildings. At the time of the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, during the reign of D. Afonso Henriques, this castle was conquered but would again fall into the hands of the Muslims, so that only in the reign of King Sancho II, in 1232, to definitively pass for Portuguese possession.
Neighboring the Guadiana River and the Alqueva Dam, it stands on the mountain Monsaraz, dominating the medieval village and the border with Spain.
