In Ponte de Lima, the pelourinho, symbol of the absolutist power, existed in the sand of the Lima River, outside of walls. With the liberal victory it was dismantled, knowing, according to information about the national patrimony, that "the Chamber dismounted it to transfer it to Queen's Square, but the various elements eventually dispersed: the base and the stones of the platform were used in the walk, the shaft in an inn, by the river, the capital in the interior courtyard of the D. Maria Pia Asylum, the shield in the Fountain of Largo de São João and the armillary sphere was lost, after having been in the Chamber for a long time. "Later, in 1936, the construction of the current structure was carried out, next to the Paços do Concelho, which was built in the 16th century and is a beautiful example of political-administrative architecture, with eighteenth-century features today. in the front the "body of stonework with two-armed staircase, access to the second floor, torn inferiorly by a perfect arched vain."

Stop At: Ponte Romana, Rua Doutor Araujo Lima, Ponte de Lima 4990-022 Portugal

The former libris of Ponte de Lima, which along with the river that bathes the village, gave the name to the locality, is its bridge.
In fact, it is a set formed by two bridges: a medieval section, of greater dimension, that begins in the left margin and extends until the Church of Santo António of the Old Tower and it passes even in two arcs.
Then the section of the Roman bridge. They are only five arches from the great arch that is in dry bed.
If you go down you will also see the foundations of Tower Velha, perhaps the first of the medieval defensive system.

The Roman bridge dates probably from the first century, since it was at that time that the route of one of the military routes of the old "Conventus Bracaraugustanus" was opened, connecting Braga to Astorga, in this case Via XIX, ordered to be opened by the Emperor Augusto.

As far as the medieval part is concerned, in spite of the fact that it is possible to go back in time, at least until the reigns of D. Pedro I and D. Fernando, by direct connection to the construction of the walls and towers that fortified the village, a work finished in 1370 , or even D. Dinis, bearing in mind documentation referring to a bridge, which could also be wooden by that time, we know of its existence in the reign of King Manuel I, more precisely in 1504, by this monarch to have ordered to do new plumbing and put merlons for decoration of the bridge, since they were no longer justified as a defensive and military option.
