The city of Porto is known as the City "Invicta". It is the city that gave its name to Portugal - very early, when designated for Portus Cale, coming later to become the capital of Portucalense. Founded by the Romans in the fourth century Porto grew up on both sides of the river and on its hillsides. This Mediterranean looking city is located on the Douro River on the northwest coast of Portugal. The River Douro arrives finally to its destination, where it can now rest together with the waters of the ocean, after
having fought against strong streams and flowed under the six bridges that connect the two riverbanks, namely Porto
and Vila Nova de Gaia. During the Middle Ages on the right riverbank one of the most ancient European cities was
born and developed, «O Porto»!

You cannot visit Porto without going to the Bolhão Market. This lovely market place is where farmers came to sell their fruit and vegetables. Nowadays you also find butchers and the inevitable souvenir shops.

Pass By: Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral), Terreiro Se, Porto 4050-573 Portugal

The Porto Cathedral is the most important religious edifice in the city and has been declared a National Monument. It is situated in the upper part of Porto.

The Cathedral is in Batalha, very close to the walls that once protected the city. The building looks a bit like a fortress with crenels from the outside.

This 16th-century former convent is now a military barracks. Cross the bridge Luis I and get a breathtaking view over the city walls, Sé Catedral and so on.

The Clérgios church was built between 1735 and 1748 in a baroque style. It's topped by the Clérgios tower, and it's one of the most emblematic monuments in the city.

The Carmelite Church was built in the 17th century, and, as the name suggests, it was populated by the Carmelite order of nuns. It is a rather sober edifice, at least on the outside, featuring a plain facade and a bell tower. On the inside it is lushly decorated.
