The Templars played an important role in all the great times and battles of Portugal, from the foundation of the country with D. Afonso Henriques to the Discoveries. The headquarters of the Templars and later the "Order of Christ" settled in Tomar, becoming the Templar capital of Portugal and Spain and one of the most important in the medieval world.

The castle of Almourol, located on a small island that was already inhabited at the time of the Roman occupation of the peninsula, from the 8th century, was occupied by the Muslims, who will have conquered it to the Visigoths. In the context of the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, Almourol was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques in 1129, who gave it to the Order of the Temple.

The primitive church dates back to the twelfth century, under the command of D. Gualdim Pais, master of the Order of the Templars, to serve as a burial ground for the Freires. The present church corresponds to the XIII century, to the reign of D. Afonso III, instituted like the most emblematic work of the national Gothic architecture. His planimetric model served as an example for other religious temples, both cathedral and conventual from north to south.

Located in the center of the city of Tomar, the Church of St. John the Baptist was originally built in the 17th century. XV, but rebuilt in the 19th century. XVI. In 1520, King D. Manuel elevated the Church to the Collegiate, thus assembling to integrate the chapels of the royal patron.
