Route Lisbon Walls Old or Moura Fence and Casa dos Bicos

Come discover various historical surprises, rescuing the memory of the times from the founding of Lisbon, through the Islamic, Al-Usbuna and more ... traveling the paths of the Islamic Wall or Old.

The original wall was probably erected in the late Roman period (III-V century) and then very possibly harnessed and strengthened in the Islamic period (8th-12th centuries). The wall that defended the Muslim Al-Usbuna would have, approximately 1250m in length in its total extension and covered in its interior an area of approximately 15 hectares. Thus, the total area of Al-Usbuna, when it reached its apogee at the end of the century, XI, would be approximately 30 hectares, joining the previously mentioned intramural area, two suburbs with a combined area of 15 hectares.

Later, the Old Fence was adapted to the urban evolution, either by the reordering of the city in the Manueline and Pombaline period, after the earthquake, or by specific needs that run to the present day.

Also known as Casa de Bras de Albuquerque, Casa dos Bicos is one of the emblematic buildings of the Portuguese capital, not only for the curious name, but also for its originality, covered with diamond-tipped stone.

The House of the Bicos presents, therefore, a very own architectural style, markedly inspired by the Italian Renaissance, with an irregular distribution of windows and doors, all of different sizes and formats.

Inside is part of the archaeological remains discovered during the restoration work, including four Roman salting tanks, part of the Moura Fence, part of a medieval tower and a section of mudéjar pavement.

Today it is the home of the José Saramago Foundation, which aims to promote the literary work of the writer. José Saramago received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998, and died on June 18, 2010.
