The stone paved streets go up to a church, with its old baptismal font made of green ceramic, donated by D. Manuel I, and its ancient wooden roofs painted with scenes of the Virgin. Behind the church there is exhibited a council plaque remembering the visit of John of the Steps, American novelist whose grandparents emigrated from this village in the middle of the 19th century.

Calheta is the most important population of the Southwestern coast of Madeira. It is a fertile region of orange roofed houses lost in a sea of banana trees, vines, and sugar plantations. Here, the garden of each house is decorated with beautiful geraniums of different colors, mauve bougainvillea and lush passion flowers.

In the parish there was a mill for making sugar that increased its importance in the sector. In this traditional fishing village there are many restaurants specializing in fish and other local delicacies, of which limpets are a highlight. With a beautiful promenade along the pebbled beach, Madalena do Mar has in its location and climate two great advantages. The parish is also known for its fishing district and is much sought after for the beauty of the Moledos site. From here one can admire the panoramic landscape of Magdalena do Mar, the church, the traditional houses, and lush vegetation.
