Templars Tour

The Templars played an important role in all the great times and battles of Portugal, from the founding of the country with D. Afonso Henriques to the Discoveries. The headquarters of the Templars and, later, the “Order of Christ” settled in Tomar making it the Templar capital of Portugal and Spain and one of the most important in the medieval world. Almourol Castle and Tomar are perfect examples to understand the Mystique of the Templars, simultaneously Knights, Warriors and Monks.

Santarém owns a rich heritage, often known as the “Gothic Capital”, for the many monuments that have been erected here dedicated to this architectural and artistic style, some already missing (as in the 1755 earthquake that destroyed so much of the city) or changed.
Its religious fervor is visible throughout the city, in the Churches of Nossa Senhora da Piedade,
Marvila, Saint Clare, Most Holy Miracle, Mercy, Jesus Christ, Seminary, Holy Cross, Saint Iria, St. John of Alporo (with Archaeological Museum), St. Stephen, St. Nicholas, in the famous and unique Church of Grace in the Convent of St. Francisco or Chapel of Our Lady of Monte.

Tomar is a beautiful city, county seat, in the Center of the Country, situated on the beautiful banks of the Nabão River, right on the Ribatejana wetlands, and one of Portugal's historic cities, with so much to tell and see.

This is a region occupied by man since long time, presenting the beautiful valley of Nabão traces that go back to the paleolithic period.
In the place of the current Tomar, there were the Roman cities of “Nabantia” and “Sellium”.
Conquered from the Moors in 1147 by the first Portuguese King, D. Afonso Henriques, it was then donated to the Templars in 1159. The Grand Master of this Order, Dom Gualdim Pais, began in 1160 the construction of the Castle and Convent that would become the seat of the Templars in Portugal, and later of the Order of Christ, and is today a World Heritage Site, classified by UNESCO.
Tomar was one of the country's bastions of defense, and a prime defensive location that has developed and gained importance over the centuries.
