Stop At: Castelo de Palmela, Palmela 2950-997 Portugal

The castle of Palmela is one of the most impressive places in the region. Busy, conquered, lost and recovered, it is a faithful testimony of the battles between the 12th and 14th centuries to establish the territory of Portugal. Built at a unique strategic point - between the Tagus and Sado rivers - it was founded by the Romans, probably in 310 BC. The castle was successively adding elements: the primitive round towers by the Romans; the square towers by the Moors; the entrance tower and the fortifications of cannons by the Portuguese kings. It also has a great view over the Arrábida mountain range and the Sado estuary.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Castelo de Sesimbra, Rua Nossa Senhora do Castelo, Sesimbra Portugal

Overlooking the city's incredible bay, it was built in Romanesque style and used the ancient Moorish fortifications from which it was named "Castle of the Moors". The view of the stunning landscape of the region, and in particular the peninsula of Troy, the estuaries of the river Tagus and Sado and the impressive Cape Espichel, is unique. In an excellent state of conservation this imposing monument to the history of Portugal is worth a visit.

Stop At: National Sanctuary of Christ the King, 2800-058 Almada, Portugal

Cristo Rei is one of the most emblematic monuments in Lisbon. The statue rises above the southern banks of the Tagus Estuary and represents Christ with arms raised, blessing the city. Since its consecration in 1959 it has been an important pilgrim Portuguese destination. The Christ King of Lisbon has many similarities to the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio, and the Brazilian statue was the original inspiration.
