Stop At: Peter and Paul Fortress, Petropavlovskaya Fortress, 3, St. Petersburg 197022 Russia
Meet your guide at the Palace Square, cross the Neva River and arrive at the legendary Peter and Paul Fortress. Since its founding in 1703, the Peter and Paul fortress, the original citadel of St. Petersburg, had been used as a prison. Ironically, it housed a prison used by the imperial family to imprison political prisoners. Later, the Bolsheviks would use the prison for the same purpose.
Your expert and friendly guide will tell you many stories and legends about Peter I and Catherine the Great, rebels against the Tsarist regime and then enemies of the state. On this tour, you will have the unique opportunity to visit the Peter & Paul Cathedral, the symbol of the city of St. Petersburg. All the Romanov tsars are buried here. And now Nicholas II and the entire last imperial family are also buried here, and this is the best place to come with a guide to learn about the entire Romanov dynasty through his family tree. After the tour, you can stay at the Fortress and continue exploring its grounds and museums or follow your guide to return to the city center.
