For a long time Phanagoria was one of the two capitals of Bosporan Kingdom in the territory of modern Russia.

The location of Phanagoria was determined in the 18th century, when marble statue bases with dedications to Aphrodite were discovered there.

The city of Phanagoria is surrounded by the largest ancient necropolis in Russia - with a total area of more than 300 hectares, which holds enormous cultural, historical and material values. At the present time you can see the finds of Phahagoria in Hermitage, Louvre and British Museum.
