Kronshtadt (also spelled Krontadt) is one of the most unusual suburbs of St. Petersburg. It's a fortified town and a naval port, which lies on Kotlin Island near the head of the Gulf of Finland. Kronshtadt was founded by Peter the Great to protect the approaches to St. Petersburg during the Great Northern War.
