Bras Basah gets its name from the Malay term for ‘wet rice’, which was once laid out to dry on the banks of a nearby river. Back then, the Bras Basah neighbourhood was designated as a European area by the British colonial planners. It explains the prevalence of Catholic churches and missionary-run schools.

The Cathedral of the Good Shepherd is the oldest Catholic church in Singapore. It was established in 1832. The neo-Palladian porticoes and steeple are its most prominent features, which a $30m restoration in 2015 made sure to keep.
