Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Pass By: Grajski Trg square, Maribor Slovenia

The square is dominated by Maribor Castle. Nowadays, the castle houses the Maribor Regional Museum.
Ibis Styles Maribor City Hotel on the western side of the square stands on the site of a famous 18th century inn, named Schwarzer Adler (The Black Eagle). Beside being a popular inn, it was an important stop for coach drivers. The statue of Bacchus under a canopy at the corner of C&A depicts the Roman god of wine, flowers, partying, and marry-making sitting on a barrel of wine. Bacchus is the counterpart to the Greek Dionysus. Opposite to the castle stands the Town Savings Bank. This neo-baroque palace belonged to the rich baker family Scherbaum. Thanks to the Scherbaums, the first electric lightbulb in this part of Europe was installed here in 1883. Worth mentioning is also the corner of the Astoria Café—probably the most famous corner in Maribor. Called “Ezl ek,” this corner used to serve as a meeting (and flirting) for generations of Maribor’s youth.

Pass By: Regional Museum Maribor, Grajska ulica 2, Maribor 2000 Slovenia

Maribor castle was built in the second half of the 15th century to protect the city from the Ottoman invasions. Today, it houses the Maribor Regional Museum, collects, protects, preserves, explores, and promotes movable cultural heritage significant for the wide Maribor region from the aspects of archaeology, ethnology and cultural history.

Pass By: Glavni Trg, Maribor Slovenia

Every Friday, Glavni trg hosts a farmers market that sells organic produce, baked goods, milk and meat products, and various handmade items, while the cafés around the square offer an opportunity to enjoy a coffee and soak up the sunrays.
The square is framed by various historical buildings and sights, including the Plague Column, the Town Hall, and the Church of St. Aloysius. In the northwestern corner is the former Tscheligi Brewery, which was the first brewery in Maribor. It opened in the first half of the 18th century and remained at the same location for good 200 years.

Pass By: Old Vine House, Vojashnishka ulica 8, Maribor 2000 Slovenia

The old vine is the only single plant with its own museum, which is housed in the Old Vine House. The house used to be a part of the city walls, and today contains the display of the long wine making tradition, a wine store and a room where visitors can taste wines from the Maribor wine-growing region.

WORLD’S OLDEST VINE

In the heart of the wine-growing region, Maribor keeps its most precious natural treasure – the oldest vine in the world that, after over 400 years, still bears fruit. The vine of the Modra kavčina or Žametovka variety was entered in the Guinness World Records book.

It is believed it was planted at the end of middle Ages. It has survived centuries of invasions, attacks and fires that threatened the city’s existence. It showed its exceptional resilience when grape phylloxera destroyed almost all vineyards in Europe.

Pass By: Maribor Cathedral (Church of St John the Baptist), Slomshkov trg 20, Maribor 2000 Slovenia

The cathedral is the religious and spiritual centre of the Maribor. The next addition to the church is the classicist bell tower. 162 steps lead to the top where an observation desk provides visitors with a splendid view of Maribor. A small apartment at the top served as a fire lookout’s living quarters in the past and houses an exhibition dedicated to the same topic today. Visitors who climb to the top can also ring the wishing bell and make a wish.

The church is also the final resting place of prominent Slovenian Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek, who was beatified in 1999 by Pope John Paul II.

The surrounding buildings add more splendour to the square: the University of Maribor, Maribor Slovene National Theatre, and Maribor post in the spot where the city alms-house and a girls’ school used to stand.
