Join this private guided night tour to Sutherland in the Karoo -- home of the South African Astronomical Observatory. We'll view the night sky through very powerful telescopes for an unforgettable experience. You'll see Jupiter and its moons, Saturn and it rings among other amazing celestial bodies - and you will visit SALT - the Southern African Large Telescope - the largest telescope of its kind in the world.

These tours run during the 7 days either side of the new moon to ensure the best stargazing.

It includes overnight accommodation in small Karoo town of Sutherland, which is world renowned among astronomers for it crystal clear night skies year round where you will see stars like you have never seen them before. Many astronomy research centres from around the world have set up their telescopes here. This is one of only a handful of major astro-viewing research centres in the world.

Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: Southern Africa Large Telescope, Old Fraserburg Road, Sutherland 6920 South Africa

We depart Cape Town mid morning and drive north to Sutherland. We will have lunch en route. We overnight in Sutherland and do guided astro-viewing through powerful telescopes. We can do optional astrophotography overnight if you have bring your DSL camera. The following morning we'll tour the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) and the space-age research telescope zone and then head back to Cape Town with a number of optional sightseeing stops en route. You'll be back in the City by evening.

If the weather looks like it won't be suitable for stargazing (very seldom in Sutherland) - we should know this a few days beforehand from the weather forecast and can then either reschedule the tour or refund you in full.
