Day sail to Izaro Island including swiming at sea

A catamaran is a perfect way to travel around the coast. It can get closer to the shore than lots of other boats, giving you a much closer look with the possibility of anchoring and enjoying some swimming or watersports.

The size of the group also means that the experience is more personal and friendly and you will get more local information from the captain (he speaks English, Spanish & of course Basque!) as he is from here and has been sailing this area most of his life.

Stop At: Izaro, Lugar Parque Lamera, 0 S N, 48370 Bermeo, Vizcaya, Spain

Leaving from our base in the coastal fishing town of Bermeo we’ll head east towards the adjoining town of Mundaka before heading out towards the island of Izaro. Legend has it that a monk who lived on the island fell in love with a local girl from Bermeo and each night she would light a candle showing him the way to go to find her. A family member who didn’t agree with the relationship lit a candle for the monk to follow only to dash him on the rocks! Following her loved one to his death the young woman threw herself off the cliffs into the sea. Whether this is true or not, it paints a romantic picture in this harsh and rugged area.

This is a beautiful sail along the rugged coastline of the basque country where you will see how intimidating the cliffs look and how small you feel all of a sudden as you remember the poor monk!!

Once we arrive at the island we’ll anchor for a sampling of local gourmet products including a glass of the local Txakoli wine the area is famous for, weather and tide permitting we can enjoy some paddle boarding and swimming before heading back to Bermeo.
