the sugar mill business. When you visit the distillery,you can taste their rums and learn about the rum-making process that has earned

El Museo Preindustrial de la caña de azúcar de Motril constituye en su ubicación, materiales y planteamientos didácticos multimedia, un conjunto único en su género. La ciudad, su cultura y su paisaje han permanecido unidos durante casi mil años a los procesos de explitación y fabricación del azúcar de caña. De hecho, las primeras noticias sobre la presencia en al-Andalus de este cultivo de origen oriental, se remontan a las cotsas granadinas del siglo X, según el cordobés al-Razi.

Desde entonces la caña de azúcar se extendió por buena parte del litoral mediterráneo aprovechando sus excepcionales condiciones climáticas y medioambientales. Con la incorporación de aquellas tierras a la España cirtiana se incrementó por la producción y la comercialización del azúcar.

La caña, convertida en monocultivo de las llanuras litorales, condicionó a partir de entonces el paisaje ambiental y urbano de extensas zonas, incluidos los montes costeros, por la necesidad de proporcionar leña a las "aduanas", "trapiches", "ingenios" o establecimientos de hacer azúcar.
