Opened in 1934, the museum houses a vast collection of Catalan, Spanish and European art that spans a period of roughly 1,000 years. The gallery includes works by Titian, Gainsborough and modernist masters such as Gaudí, too. Perhaps start with the museum's most famous treasures: its Romanesque frescoes. View the vivid artworks, many of which are displayed in recreated church interiors. Don't miss the eye-catching 12th-century Christ in Majesty that depicts a luminous Christ sitting on a rainbow. Explore the stunning Renaissance and baroque collections of paintings and sculptures from Europe between the 1400s and 1900s, with masterpieces by Canaletto, Titian and Goya. Another highlight is the Modern Art section, home to paintings, sculptures, posters and other art nouveau works by 19th- and 20th-century Catalan artists. The showpiece is a collection of Gaudí furniture that includes sinuous wood chairs and doors.
How long you stay in the museum is up to you, but many people find that three hours is sufficient.
