Pass By: Synagogue of Saint Mary the White, Calle Reyes Catolicos 4, 45002 Toledo Spain

The synagogue of Santa Maria la Blanca is a religious building erected in the city of Toledo, Spain in 1180 (according to the inscription on a beam). Its stylistic and cultural classification is not simple, because it was constructed in Christian territory, the Kingdom of Castile, by Islamic constructors, for Jewish use and owers.

Magnificent example of the Baroque style, a superb altarpiece facade and in one of the highest points in the city, which allows a magnificent panoramic view of Toledo from its towers.

The temple, with enormous dimensions, is a faithful exponent of counter-reformation spirituality. From a single nave flanked by side chapels that communicate among themselves, its great architecture is expressed in the great dome that covers the area of the transept.

The church is already mentioned in the 12th century, although it was rebuilt at the end of the 14th century by order of the Count of Orgaz, who added the current Christian bell tower to the former Muslim minaret. The tower is one of the best Mudejar exponents of Toledo, with glazed pottery and inlays of a Visigothic niche and a cross pattée.

It is of a single ship with lateral chapels between the buttresses. On its main facade, the chains of released prisoners stand out. It has a late Gothic cloister and the roof of the second floor is Mudejar. His church has only one crashed dome ship. It also highlights the main chapel decorated with shields of the Catholic Monarchs supported by large eagles, ogee arches and figures of saints.

Legend has it that a shaft of light guided the king to a figurine of the crucified Christ that had been hidden for centuries. He left his shield there with the inscription, "This is the shield which the King Alfonso VI left in this chapel when he conquered Toledo, and the first mass was held here".[1]

In 1186, Alfonso VIII gave the building to the Knights of the Order of St John, who established it as the Chapel of the Holy Cross (Ermita de la Santa Cruz). It was at this time that the mosque was renamed and the apse was added.

The existence of a building before the mosque has not been proved, since the level of excavation has not gone deep in Visigothic or Roman substrate. However, the great number of Visigothic reliefs forming Roman borders and cornices embedded in the walls is surprising.
