02 Day Pokunuthenna

During this 2 Day tour, on the first day, you will be going on a Jeep Safari in the Udawalawe National Park and visiting an Elephant transit home. On the second day, you will visit a rural village called Pukunuthenna Village, where you will get a first-hand experience of their daily lifestyles and enjoy yourselves at the same time.

Itinerary

Day 1: Pickup - Udawalawe

Stop At: Elephant Transit Home (ETH), 5km west of the Uda Walawe National Park entrance, Udawalawe National Park Sri Lanka
We will pick up the guests from any hotel or location in the following areas: Kalutara / Wadduwa / Bentota / Beruwela / Koggala / Ahungalla / Hikkaduwa / Galle, and proceed to Udawalawe.

You will first visit the Elephant Transit Home where you will be able to watch elephants feeding.

Stop At: Udawalawe National Park Sri Lanka
You will proceed to Udawalwe National Park for a Jeep safari (an evening safari is optional).

Udawalawe lies south of the central hills of the island, and it surrounds the man-made reservoir of Udawalawe, which is part of the park. It is a mixture of an abandoned teak plantation, scrub jungle & grassland. The dry season is best to watch many herds of elephant that roam the park; which is usually between May & September. Almost the entire park is covered with tall, reedy Pohon grass, which grows all year round. Udawalawe is a superb place to watch elephants. An estimated 450 elephants live here.

You will have lunch at a local restaurant and you will spend your evening leisurely at a hotel in Udawalwe where you will spend the night.

• Dinner: You will have your Dinner at the hotel in Udawalwe which you will be spending the night
Accommodation included: You will be spending the night at a hotel in Udawalawe.

Day 2: Pokunutenna Village - drop off.

Stop At: Udawalawe National Park, 7th Mile Post, Udawalawa 70190, Sri Lanka
You will have the morning breakfast at the hotel you spent the night in Udawalawe. After breakfast, you will proceed to Pokunuthenna Village.

Pokunuthenna is a beautiful rural village bordering the forest and the Pokunuthenna Tank. It’s 6 km away from the Hambegamuwa and Weli Oya villages. Approximately 36 families live making a living from their main income source through cultivating & farming rice fields & various vegetables & fruits. There are many species of Birds, Butterflies, Insects & small mammals are found specifically around the Pokunuthenna area. It’s rich with lush green paddy fields, Lakes & thick jungle areas where you could get a once in a lifetime experience with picturesque landscapes overlooking the Kura gala hills.

Before reaching Pokunuthenna Village you will visit the Damwel Odaya Village Temple and you will take a Land Master (hand tractor) ride from the temple to the Pokunuthenna Eco Centre (40minute ride).

Upon reaching the village, you will be welcome and be given a briefing about Pokunuthenna. Then you will commence the sight-seeing and the village tour. You can also do bird watching and lake fishing activities which is optional. You will then visit a local family and cultivations (including rice fields), where you will be given refreshments (King coconut / tea) at the local family residence. The family will then do a cookery demonstration (after purchasing the vegetables from the local family) and you will enjoy a Rural Village style lunch.

You will then relax at the Pokunuthenna Eco centre and after evening tea, you will be dropped off at the location you were picked up or any location nearby which the guests wants, confirming the end of the tour.

• Lunch: You will enjoy a Rural Village type lunch at the Pokunuthenna village.
