Known as the eighth wonder of the world, Sigiriya is one of the most popular travelers destinations in Sri Lanka. The ancient city of Sigiriya dates back to the 477 AD when the King Kashyapa ruled. He became the ruler after he murdered his father by plastering him up to a mud wall. After murdering his father, the King Kashyapa had to run away from the capital of Anuradhapura. Then he built his kingdom in the midst of the forests where he finds a magnificent rock standing up among the forests. The King Kashyapa built his castle on this rock of 600 ft high with luxurious pavilions, halls, gardens etc. Before it became the capital of the kingdom in the 5th BC, Sigiriya has been a Buddhist monastery since the 3rd century BC. For its unique and incredible architecture and historical importance, Sigiriya was declared a World Heritage site in 1982 by the UNESCO.

Dambulla has been a popular place among the Buddhist as well as Hindu pilgrimages ever since the 1st Century BC. It is a cave temple located on top of a rock mountain (elevation 1118 ft) and has a great deal of Buddhist monuments and statues. UNESCO declared the Cave Temple of Dambulla a World Heritage Site by in 1991.
Dambulla is the Sri Lankas Largest Rock Cave Temple protecting the worlds images of Budhdha and paintings of thousands of years of age. The temple was constructed in the time of King Valagamba (103 BC and 89-77 BC), who lived in these caves for 12 years hiding from the Indian invaders. After getting his throne back, the King built the caves into a Buddhist temple. The caves built by him were named as Devarajalena, Maharajalena and the Paccimalena. Later on many other Kings including King Vijayabahu, King Keerthi Sri Nissankamalla, made additions and renovations to the temple. It is said that the King Keerthi Sri Nissankamalla (1187-1196 AD) added many Buddha images being and gold plated seventy three Buddha statues inside the caves.
The temple has 5 caves and around 157 statues of Buddha, including a 15 meters long reclining Buddha. In addition, the caves are decorated with colored paintings and frescoes on the walls the rock ceilings which are present till today

Nalanda Gedige is an ancient complete stone temple near Matale, Sri Lanka and its original site was considered as the center of Sri Lanka. The building was constructed in between 8th and 10th centuries with dravidian architecture in( Pallava style )and is believed to have been used by Buddhists. Also some scholars describe this building is a dravidian architecture dedicated to a Mahayanaa cult with pronounced Trantric learning and known for an ancient monument of possible Vajrayana (Tantric) Buddhist affinities.

The Aluvihare Rock Temple (also called Matale Alu Viharaya) is a sacred Buddhist temple located in Aluvihare, Matale District of Sri Lanka.Surrounded by hills, the Aluvihara cave temple is situated 30 km north of Kandy on the Matale-Dambulla road. The history of Aluvihare Rock Temple is traced back to the 3rd Century B.C to the reign of King Devanampiyatissa. It is believed that the King built the dagoba, planted the Bo sapling and founded the temple after the introduction of Buddhism to the country during his reign.
Aluvihare Rock Temple was the historic location where the Pāli Canon was first written down completely in text on ola (palm) leaves. Many monastery caves, some of which exhibit frescoes are situated near this temple.
