Day 2: Trincomalee - Sri Lanka

Stop At: Koneswaram Temple, Trincomalee Sri Lanka
Holy Koneswaram Temple, is a Hindu temple in Thirukonamalai (Trincomalee) on the east coast of Sri Lanka. The temple lies on a high rocky promontory surrounded on three sides by the sea. It bears a history of over three millennia with its records indicating its roots in 1580 BC. This, still beautiful, historical monument is what remains of what once was a sprawling temple city equal to the ancient city of Madurai, India.​

Stop At: Nilaveli Beach, Nilaveli Sri Lanka
Trincomalee is the gateway to a few of the finest beaches on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, namely Uppuveli and Nilaveli located 6km and 16km away from the town area. The beaches with knee deep shallow waters that runs hundreds of feet into the sea, afford ample opportunities for surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and Whale Watching.

Pigeon Island National Park is one of the two marine national parks of Sri Lanka. The national park is situated 1 km off the coast of Nilaveli, a coastal town in Eastern Province, encompassing a total area of 471.429 hectares. The island’s name derives from the rock pigeon which has colonised it. The national park contains some of the best remaining coral reefs of Sri Lanka.​​

Occupying the neck of a narrow peninsula, Fort Fredrick has been a defensively important site for centuries. A fortress was initially constructed here by the Portuguese in 1623 and later rebuilt by the Dutch. The British took over in 1782 (look out for royal insignias crowning the tunnel-like gateway that pierces the fort’s massively stout walls).​

Kanniya Hot Springs is famous hot well in Sri Lanka from the past. There are seven wells in a square shape. Wells are only 3–4 feet deep and you can clearly see the bottom. The temperature is considerably high but varies from one spring to another. Wells run out of the water when 10-15 buckets of water are taken out.

Day 3: Polonnaruwa - Sri Lanka

Polonnaruwa city reached a dazzling but pitifully brief zenith in the 12th century and though ravaged by invasion in the centuries that followed, much evidence remains of the old grandeur and glory. The ruins of the ancient city stand on the east shore of a large artificial lake, the Topa Wewa Lake, or Parakrama Samudraya (the Sea of Parakrama), built by King Parakramabahu I (1153-86), whose reign was Polonnaruwa‘s golden age.

Day 4: Batticaloa - Sri Lanka

Stop At: Pasikudah Beach, Pasikuda Road, Kalkudah 30410 Sri Lanka
Located about 35Km north of Batticaloa, the two lovely bay beaches of Kalkudah (a 2 km long wide stretch of beach) and Passikudah (a wide beach that is 4 km long) nestles on either side of the palm-tipped Kalkudah headland. The twin bay beaches, well protected from the monsoon by offshore reef make up an ideal stretch for bathing, windsurfing water skiing and boating etc. It is one of the best-known reef systems in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka and has been proposed as a Marine Sanctuary by NARA.

Batticaloa Light House called Muttuwaran Lighthouse which was built by the British in the year 1913 is located where the Batticaloa lagoon meets the Indian Ocean along the Bar Road. The Bar Road is a stretch of sand that is found along the lagoon with the ocean towards the east. The lighthouse rising to a height of 28 meters is a rounded tower. The observatory at the top with a radius of six feet features a balcony painted in red with a couple of railings to protect the light housekeeper.

Stop At: Batticaloa Fort, Court House Road, Batticaloa 30000 Sri Lanka
The solid looking Batticaloa Fort with hulking walls, the most picturesque of the small Dutch forts of Sri Lanka was built by the Portuguese in 1628. The fort guarded by four bastions, protected by the sea from 2 sides and by a moat on other 2 sides, was captured by the Dutch from the Portuguese in 1638. It was the first Portuguese fort in Sri Lanka captured by the Dutch. In the year 1772, the fort fell to the British.

Stop At: Kallady Bridge, Batticaloa Sri Lanka
Batticaloa lagoon is famous for its `Singing Fish’. On full moon nights, during the period of April to September, a faint but distinct musical sound resembling a plucked guitar rises from the lagoon waters in the area along the Kallady Bridge, a 2 Km off the town center of Batticaloa. The mysterious music is attributed to a noise emanated from some form of a marine life found in the lagoon. The best way to listen to the music is to dip the end of an oar into the water and hold the other end to your ear.

Day 6: Ella - Sri Lanka

Stop At: Ella Rock, Ella Main Street NECS-Nature Exploration and Conservation Society Sri Lanka, Ella 90090 Sri Lanka
The climb up to the rock is quite strenuous, and there are several routes up. This means that you may miss the easier ones and take one of the tougher ones up; making your hike harder. Alternatively, if you are an experienced hiker, the climb up Ella Rock gives you the opportunity to challenge yourself if you feel like it. Once you get up to the summit; you will be faced with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. This includes views of Little Adam’s Peak and a clear view of the Ella Gap. The Ella Gap is a space between the mountains as an arrow flies; that gives a fantastic view all the way to the southern coast.

Little Adam’s Peak in Ella, however, is the perfect cousin of the larger peak to hike with your training gloves on. It’s not as exhausting to hike; and, at just 1141m of height, can be climbed by even an inexperienced hiker. The views are straight out of a fantasy movie and possibly even better than that of the larger mountain.

In the misty mountains of tropical Sri Lanka, the wide Ravana falls gushes down a height of 82 feet falling from an oval concave rock. It takes the form of a drooping areca flower during the peak season of its water flow, but its size is reduced dramatically during the dry season. Located in the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary in Ella, this waterfall is the source of many legends and secrets.​

Built at 3100m above sea level, among the craggy peaks of the Central Highlands; the Nine Arches forms a viaduct between the Damodara and Ella Railway stations. Built entirely out of brick, rock, and cement; without a single piece of steel; the bridge has stood solidly from 1921, its time of creation. According to history, the bridge was built by the locals using such materials; when the construction came to a standstill from the lack of steel caused by World War I. But, in addition to this history; lore abounds the creation of the bridge.

Day 9: Galle - Sri Lanka

Stop At: Galle Fort, Church Street, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
Dutch Fort as it is also known as a fortification first built by the Portuguese on the Southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. It was built in the late 16th century, were quite basic. However, the fort underwent extensive modifications in the 17th century by the Dutch, making it one of the most important archaeological, architectural and historic monuments to illustrate the European influence in South East Asia between the 16th and 19th centuries. According to a statement by UNESCO, the site was recognised as a World Heritage Site for its unique exposition of an urban ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and traditions.

The Groote Kerk or Dutch Reformed Church is located within the Galle Fort in Galle, Sri Lanka and is situated near the entrance to the fort. The church was built by the Dutch in 1755 and is one of the oldest Protestant churches still in use in the country.
