this temple was started in year 01 AD. This temple has two important historical inscriptions, which says this temple was offer to Maha Sanga by a daughter of Mahachula Mahatissa. Second one says one cave offered to Maha Sanga by a provincial leader call Sumana.

Nawagamuwa Pattini Devalaya is an Archaeological Protected Monuments in Colombo for its importance in historical, architectural and anthropological facets. According to popular legends the early establishment of Devalaya goes back to 1st century AD.

Buddhists believe the temple to have been hallowed during the third and final visit of the Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka, eight years after gaining enlightenment. Its history would thus go back to before 500 BCE. The Mahawansa records that the original Stupa at Kelaniya enshrined a gem-studded throne on which the Buddha sat and preached.
