Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka

The Cultural Triangle is the land which lies within the three ancient cities of Dambulla, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, which bear testament to the great civilisation that existed here dating back to 4 BC. On seeing the extensive ruins here, and with a little imagination it is possible to re-create the life of the proud people that once lived here and developed this region into the masterpiece of creation that it once was. The numerous irrigation tanks covering hundreds of acres, with their waters held back with manually constructed packed earth bunds are proof that the ancient Kings were exceptionally advanced for their time. The Cultural Triangle holds the distinction of housing three of the seven World Heritage Sites in the country which are Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya.

Itinerary

Day 1: Dambulla

Stop At: Dambulla, Dambulla, Central Province
Pickup from Bandaranayake International Airport and transfer to Dambulla.

Visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, the largest painted complex of caves in the world

Day 2: Anuradhapura

Stop At: Anuradhapura, Anuradhapura, North Central Province
After breakfast drive to Anuradhapura

The ruins of Anuradhapura are one of South Asia’s most evocative sights. The sprawling complex contains a rich collection of archaeological and architectural wonders: enormous dagobas (brick stupas), ancient pools and crumbling temples, built during Anuradhapura’s thousand years of rule over Sri Lanka. Today, several of the sites remain in use as holy places and temples

You will visit some of the major sites such as:
Sri Maha Bodhi
Isurumuniya
Samadhi Sthupa
Mihintale and etc

In the evening come back to your hotel in Habarana or Sigiriya

Day 3: Polonnaruwa and Village Tour

Stop At: Polonnaruwa, Polonnaruwa, North Central Province
After your breakfast visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa which was a royal capital of both the Chola and Sinhalese kingdoms for three centuries. Today’s archaeological park is a delight to explore, with hundreds of ancient structures, temples and statues

Next go for a village tour in beautiful Hiriwadunna Village. Experience travelling on a bullock cart, a walk in the paddy fields and a boat ride to get to the village. Have a delicious authentic Sri Lankan lunch cooked in a village home

Day 4: Sigiriya and Kandy

Stop At: Kandy, Kandy, Kandy District, Central Province
In the morning at about 7.00 am climb the enormous Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the eighth wonder of the world

After that proceed to Kandy. En route visit the incredible Matale Hindu Temple. Visit the impressive golden roofed Temple of Tooth in Kandy, one of the most sacred shrines in the whole country

Enjoy a cultural show in the evening
