Oceanside urban park, Galle Face Green stretches for 500 m (1,600 ft) along the coast. Governor Sir Henry George Ward laid the promenade in 1859. This was used as a horse racing site, a golf course, and also to play cricket, polo, football, tennis, and rugby.
