Stop At: Madu Ganga Biodiversity Area, Balapitiya Sri Lanka

Make your way to the Madu River, where this tour begins at 9am. Board a boat into the mangrove marshes of the Madu River, traveling through shadowy caverns formed by the trees, and interspersed with bright open stretches of water.

Learn more about mangroves while watching for crocodiles, water snakes, tree snakes, and wild boars in their natural habitat. It's also common to see cormorants, storks, and other birds, which hunt for prey in the river current. As you pass shallower areas of the river, you'll spot pots for catching prawn and shrimp, then visit an old Buddhist temple on one of the river's many islands. Pause at another island that's devoted to growing cinnamon, with the chance to purchase fresh, aromatic cinnamon to bring home. 

If desired, you can stop by a fish massage parlor,  where you can dangle your feet into a fenced-off part of the river to get treated by the "massage fish" (own expense). This one- to two-hour boat tour concludes at the original departure point.
