The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa is a sacred place of worship for Buddhists as it is believed to hold the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha. The city is believed to have been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, mostly due to the significance of the temple. The temple was built within the complex of the royal palace, as it was believed that whoever holds the sacred tooth relic has to hold the governance of the country.

Stop At: Royal Palace of Kandy, Sri Dalada Veediya Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka
Situated right next to the sacred temple of the tooth, the Royal Palace was the official residence of the last king of Kandy. It is believed that the only reason the temple and palace is located within the same complex is because whoever had the right to govern the country should hold hold the relic for safe keeping.

Kandy Lake ushers in cool winds from the surrounding mountains to the busy streets. This man- made lake is built right opposite the temple complex. It was said that the king built this lake with a secret tunnel that passes through the palace. You can walk around the lake or enjoy a scenic boat ride from one end to the other.

The temple was built in the year 1370 and was believed to have been built by the Queen and a drummer from the village. Stop At: Lankathilaka Temple, Kovilakanda, Sri Lanka
Constructed as a four storey building, Lankathilaka temple stands at eighty feet high on an uneven rock overlooking the Hantane Mountain Range. Dating back to 1344 AD when King Buwanekabahu IV built the temple, was dedicated to the worship of the Buddha and other deities including Vishnu, Vibhishana, Kumara Banadara, and Saman.

With a history dating back to the 14th century, Gadaladeniya Vihara is one of the largest, ancient rock temples in Sri Lanka. This old monastery was built over a rock in Diggala, Kandy by King Buwanekabaghu the fourth. The main shrine holds a single statue of the Buddha.

The International Buddhist Museum is the world’s first international Buddhist Museum. Located next to the National Museum of Kandy and the Sri Dalada Maligawa. The museum was built based on the contributions made by China, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Depal and Pakistan.

Day 2: Kandy to Ella train ride & 9 Arch Bridge

After the breakfast in your hotel, you will enjoy an amazing scenic train ride from Kandy to Ella. After arriving to Ella you will visit world famous Nine Arch Bridge.

The famous Nine Arches Bridge has made it to almost every Instagram feed of explorers to the island. The bridge is located between Ella and Demodara railway stations and is most famous because of its curved structure. Known to be the best example of a colonial-era railway, the bridge has attracted tourists from around the world. The bridge is approximately 30 m high.

Day 3: Ella - Yala national park

Deriving its name from its big brother, the sacred mountain Adam’s Peak, Little Adam’s Peak is 2243m above sea level. The trail to the mountain is fairly average and would require you to have a medium level of fitness. With marked paths, you’ll have to clamber through some narrow rocky areas to reach the summit. The view from the peak is definitely worth the arduous climb. You will have refreshments on top of mountain while enjoying endless green views across south coast.

Day 5: Galle - Departure (You will drive to Colombo international airport for departure)

Stop At: Galle Fort, Church Street, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
Your south coast adventure begins in Galle and takes you to some of the most popular locations around the historic city. The ancient town of Galle is steeped in history that dates back to when the Portuguese first invaded the island. Following their invasion, they built the Galle Fort to keep other invaders out, however, the fort and the country quickly fell to the hands of the Dutch and later the British who fortified the fort. Stroll through the bricked-ramparts and you’ll find the towering Galle Clock tower and the Galle Lighthouse, both with an interesting story that will excite history buffs. Surrounding this beautiful town are the coastal cities of Unawatuna, Thalpe and Rummasala; the latter is most known for the Peace Pagoda that was built here to promote peace on the island.
