Wilpattu National Park Safari from Dambulla (Private Day Tour)

This tour takes you from your hotel in Dambulla to Wilpattu National Park on a guided jeep safari. Get a chance to catch sight of the elusive Sri Lankan Leopard. Photograph a number of endemic and threatened wildlife within their natural habitats. Enjoy an excellent picnic lunch within the park, surrounded by nature. This is a rare opportunity to experience Sri Lanka at its wildest.

You will be picked up from your hotel in Dambulla at 5:00 am by your chauffeur. So be ready for an early start and make sure to ask your hotel for a packed breakfast, as you won’t have time to stop along the way.

It takes approximately 2 hours to get to Wilpattu National Park from Dambulla. The park will open at 7:00 am. Once you get there you will be going on a 7 hour jeep safari. Before you go in you will have the chance to look through some of the informational leaflets at the entrance, and possibly even purchase a booklet on the wildlife - if you are interested.

Wilpattu National Park was started in 1905 as a sanctuary for wildlife, and was upgraded into a National Park in 1938. With a size of 1,317 square kilometers, it’s one of the oldest and largest national parks in Sri Lanka. It hosts a variety of vegetation, over 30 species of mammals, and several tens of species of birds and reptiles. Included in the list are threatened, rare and endemic species such as the Sri Lankan elephant, Sri Lankan sloth bear, Sri Lankan leopard, Sri Lankan axis deer, tufted grey langur, water buffalo, sambhur, spotted deer, painted stork, the open bill, little cormorant, Sri Lankan junglefowl, garganey, pintail, whistling teal, spoonbill, black-headed ibis, large white egret, cattle egret, purple heron, greater coucal, Malabar pied hornbill, Indian paradise fly-catcher, Chestnut-headed bee-eater, Indian peafowl, Bengal monitor, Indian rock python, and the mugger crocodile.

Your guide will drive you along the best game trails and help you identify some of the rarer birds and animals that you will get the opportunity to view.

At approximately noon, your guide will park the vehicle in a shady location so that you can enjoy your picnic lunch. You will have a meal of either rice and curry, sandwiches, or noodles. This will be according to your selection during your time of booking. Being parked will also allow you to watch the wildlife with them undisturbed the noise of the jeep. Therefore you have a higher chance of spotting several fauna at this time if you’re quiet enough.

After lunch, you will begin your drive back to the entrance. You will be able to return to the entrance by 2:00 pm, bringing the safari to an end. After this, your guide will drop drive you back to your hotel in Dambulla, dropping you off by approximately 4:00 pm, completing your tour.
