Amboni Cave 5 day's Tour

The Amboni Caves are the most extensive limestone caves in East Africa. They are located 8 km north of Tanga City in Tanzania off the Tanga-Mombasa road. The caves were formed about 150 million years ago during the Jurassic age. It covers an area of 234 km².

Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi to Tanga

Stop At: Amboni Caves, Usambara Street/Independence Avenue, Tanga City Off the Tanga-Mombasa Road, Tanga Tanzania
According to researchers the area, the caves were formed during the Jurassic age and are located in Kiomoni Village about 8 km north of Tanga City in Tanzania off the Tanga-Mombasa road. It is not known exactly when the caves were discovered but reports indicate that ethnic groups such as the Sambaa, Bondei and Digo who lived near the caves used it for prayers, there are also sacred chambers for worshiping some spirits believed to harbor supernatural powers to remove sufferings and cure curse causing sickness and body weakness. The caves are very dark inside and considered lethal if walked inside without a guide, nearly all its tunnels or chambers are accessible to tourists via guided tour. Part of the caves was used as hiding places for the locals8

Day 2: TANGA CITY TOUR

Stop At: Urithi Tanga Museum, Independence Avenue (next to the Tanga Library), Tanga Tanzania
Tanga was once another stopping point, in competition with Pangani and Bagamoyo, for caravans on their way to the hinterland of Central Africa searching for ivory and slaves. The Germans also made it a centre of colonial administration during their occupation in the early 20th century. Evidence of German’s presence can be found in Tanga’s architecture today, but only few landmarks and historical buildings have remained in the area. Tanga’s port, however, provides a main link between northern Tanzania and the Indian Ocean

Day 4: Pangani Beach

Stop At: Pangani beach Resort, Plot 4 , Tanga Pangani Road, Pangani, Tanzania
About 55km south of Tanga is the small Swahili outpost of Pangani. It rose from obscure beginnings as just one of many coastal dhow ports to become a terminus of the caravan route from Lake Tanganyika, a major export point for slaves and ivory, and one of the largest ports between Bagamoyo and Mombasa. Sisal and copra plantations were established in the area, and several European missions and exploratory journeys to the interior began from here. By the end of the 19th century, the focus had shifted to Tanga and Dar es Salaam, and Pangani again faded into anonymity. Today the sleepy, dilapidated town makes for an intriguing step back into history.
